Overall Objective: to establish efficient energy production, procurement and distribution systems in an environmentally sound manner

Specific Objective

Specific Action

to encourage rural communities to substitute hydropower for other sources of renewable energy (for example wood, biogas, wind, solar, geothermal or micro-hydro)
bullet promote the use of alternative sources of energy
bulletestablish appropriate tax and other financial incentives for renewable energy development
bulletdevelop an Energy policy
bulletrevive the rural electrification programme in Pemba and Unguja
bullet support research and development on rural energy

The essential part of the energy sector strategy is to repair the rural electricity system. The following strategic guidelines will apply:

bulletfurther extension of the distribution network to rural areas
bulletre-evaluation of proposals on the mainland link for Pemba
bulletencouragement of experiments with, and investment in, other sources of energy
bulletbuild the institutional capacity of the energy sector
